The Magic of Lake Lure: Ducks, Onion Rings, and Dirty Dancing
Lake Lure may be famous as one of the filming locations for Dirty Dancing, but for me, summers there bring back so many fond memories: swimming alongside the ducks at a beach nestled in the mountains, eating onion rings for lunch, and grabbing a popsicle from the snack shack before heading into the warm lake water.
An Atlas Obscura article describes Lake Lure, North
Carolina, as “a bit of heaven.” And that’s exactly what it feels like: a tiny,
enchanted mountain town, and probably the only place on Earth where you can
witness questionable, yet ambitious, Dirty Dancing reenactments.
Cue lifeguard whistle.
Since the beach was closed last year due to Lake Lure and neighboring towns rebuilding after Hurricane Helene, I'd been looking forward to getting back in the water all year.
We headed down midday on a Thursday. The beach wasn’t crowded at all, and
parking was ample.
I changed into my suit and immediately headed into the water. Swimming by a couple on floats, I overheard them say, “There’s just something about Lake Lure.” And there is. It’s like bottled summer.
I didn’t see the ducks this year, so after my long swim I asked the
lifeguard if they still come around.
“They do,” the lifeguard said, “the ducks and geese usually come out after
everyone leaves. The lifeguard that’s on shift before me has to rake all their
poop off the beach in the morning.”
“Aw. That’s so wonderful to hear! You made my day!” I exclaimed before
making my way back over to my towel, where my dad told me he thought he'd been
filming me swimming for a while... until he realized he'd accidentally been
filming a small child.
Apparently, being misidentified is becoming a summer tradition. A few years
ago at Oak Island, a small crowd gathered because they thought I was a seal.
After all the “oohs!” and “ahhs!” my mother said, “That’s my daughter.”
After the beach, we headed over to Lured Market & Grill. It’s absolutely
adorable, with picnic tables and plastic pink flamingos dotting the astroturf.
It feels like ’90s beach nostalgia made modern with a “Borrow a Leash” station,
a little “Lured” library, and carabiners bolted to the tables so you can hook
your dog’s leash while you eat.
Order your food at the window of the small building, then grab your drinks
inside at the bar or from the coolers.
I had a vegan Beyond Burger with fries. The fries were crunchy and hot,
quite possibly the world’s best post-swim snack. The burger made the meal. It
was beautifully cooked, crisp around the edges while staying juicy and tender
inside, all served on a delightfully chewy bun.
Don’t miss the historic Lake Lure Inn & Spa for a cocktail or mocktail on the porch, if you happen to catch the bar while it’s open. Or spend the
night at this nearly century-old inn that, depending on who you ask, may also
be home to a resident ghost who has lingered in the basement for decades.
Bonus: If you stay
at Lake Lure Inn, you can walk to the beach!
If smaller motels and inns are more your style, head into
Chimney Rock, where charming roadside accommodations line the village, even as
some continue rebuilding after Helene.
Speaking of Chimney Rock, there’s no better
place to spend the rest of your afternoon after kayaking, boating, or swimming
than exploring the village. While rebuilding continues, there’s no shortage of
shops and businesses to discover. I suggest parking at one end, perusing the
shops on your way down, then wandering back along the opposite side.
Each shop is unique and offers something different, from reindeer-themed
ducks to Dirty Dancing mugs and magical gems. I even got an early
start on Christmas shopping and couldn't resist picking up an adorable
reindeer-themed duck for my nephew. (Yes, my holiday shopping has officially
begun.)
Stop by the coffee shop for your post-swim oat milk iced chai and make sure
you don’t miss Bubba at Bubba O’Leary’s. Not only do you get to meet the
infamous Bubba, but they’ve also got a great selection of athletic wear
(including the world’s cutest North Face shorts) and, of course, Bubba
plushies! And if you’re planning to hike Chimney Rock,
well, now you have an excuse to buy the shorts.
Whether you’re hunting for a magical mountain gem or a little Lake Lure
nostalgia to take home, Lake Lure and Chimney Rock won’t disappoint.
Summer’s not over yet. The ducks are waiting... even if they don’t come out
until after you’ve left.
